12 Giants of 2007 ::: A Summary

One of the great stories of the Bible is that of David and Goliath: a shepherd boy up against a giant of a professional soldier. The understanding that this boy, the youngest of a family chosen from the ‘outback’ of his nation could lead his people, should stir hope and passion in each of us. David was never perfect but the Bible records that he was a ‘man after God’s own heart’. He kept ‘short accounts’ with the Lord, communed with him in song through the joy, repentance and sometimes heartbreak of life and stood up to the Lord’s enemies including Goliath and the four giants of Gath (believed to be Goliath’s brothers) mentioned in 2nd Samuel.

In 2008, we aim to target some of the ‘giants’ that challenge our nation. God said he has plans for us that are for good and not for evil, but often we see ‘giants’ and are afraid to step up and step in to His promises. After seeking the Lord for His direction for this year, we believe that we need to pray into these key areas to bring release from these ‘giants’ and discover what God has provided as a better alternative.

Each month through 2008, we will look at a ‘giant’ and ask for your support to help bring down this problem that raises itself up against the Name of God:

January: Abandoning our Christian heritage

• forsaking our national identity
• neglecting to teach children Christian morals
• unbalanced promotion of minority religions

February: Family problems

• divorce & infidelity
• neglecting to discipline & guide children
• allowing corrupting influences into home

March: Abuse

• eating disorders
• drug & alcohol abuse
• physical, mental & sexual abuse

April: Popular culture

• ‘I want it all & I want it now’
• sexually inappropriate media
• biased media

May: Alternative lifestyles

• homosexuality & metrosexuality
• promiscuity & sex outside marriage
• same-sex marriages & adoption of children by same-sex couples

June: Illness

• disability
• injury
• stress, fatigue & mental illnesses

July: Bioethics

• stem cell research & cloning
• euthanasia & abortion
• plastic surgery

August: Fear

• fear of God, hell & judgement
• fear of illness & death
• fear of the future

September: Terrorism

• Islam’s agenda
• lack of Christian support for Israel
• lack of accountability as a nation

October: Spiritual strongholds

• neglect of Christian duties
• idol worship
• compromise of Christianity

November: False beliefs

• New Age / universalism / wicca
• the ‘modern gospel’ & the old ‘God doesn’t care what I do so long as I’m not hurting anyone’ argument
• The Big Bang & evolution

December: Financial problems

• credit card debt & lack of financial responsibility
• gambling
• abuse of welfare

We can attack each of the above ‘giants’ with five ‘stones’:

1. sincere repentance
2. prayer & fasting
3. dedication to the Word
4. godly action
5. speaking truth
