April : Popular Culture ‘I said to their children in the desert, “Do not follow the statutes of your fathers or keep their laws or defile yourselves with their idols. I am the Lord your God; follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.’ Ez 20:18-19 There’s an old saying that goes, ‘What’s right is not always popular, and what’s popular is not always right.’ It’s so true - especially because so many choose the world (the ‘popular’) over God’s Word (the ‘right’). In April, we are focusing on the ‘giant’ of Popular Culture. In many ways, our society has developed an ‘I want it all and I want it now’ mindset. We just aren’t content with God’s gifts and timing. We think we know what’s better for our lives than what He does. Our society also tell us that it’s OK to expose our children to violence and blasphemy in the media. Teenagers are growing up to believe that adultery and multiple sexual partners are not only acceptable, but even required if they are to be ‘normal’. But God’s Word calls us to be set apart from the world. He calls us to a higher standard of living, one that honours Him and His Word. Let’s combat this ‘giant’ through:
